Known benefits of zeolite in human health

Immune support, detoxification and ROS reduction.

MZM-DYNACOL™ consists of micronised zeolite mordenite (MZM; calcium magnesium potassium sodium aluminosilicate) as the sole nutritional active ingredient. The latter is natural aluminosilicate containing all four essential mineral cations: calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), potassium (K+) and sodium (Na+). The former two are present in larger portions than the latters. All of these cations are bound to the aluminosilicate structure in a very labile way, prone to ion-exchange process. In this manner, micronised zeolite mordenite of MZM-DYNACOL™ in gastrointestinal (GI) tract acts as an effective source of calcium and magnesium cations (Ca2+, Mg2+) [1]. MZM also releases other essential cations, but these dosages are almost negligible.

Additionally it has been found that MZM does act as an effective source of highly bioavailable silicon in the form of ortho-silicic acid (H4SiO4). Experiments showed that trituration of MZM powder even in neutral water causes release of significant amounts of ortho-silicic acid (around 0.15-0.20 mg of Si per each gram of MZM). After trituration in pure redistilled water, starting MZM powder was removed by filtration, and thus obtained clear aqueous supernatant was additionally filtered through 44 μm pore filter. Subsequent quantitative analysis of such clear aqueous supernatants by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) showed mentioned level of soluble silicon. Basic inorganic chemistry shows that under these conditions silicon can be present only in the form of ortho-silicic acid. At the same time it is known from medicinal literature that only this particular form of silicon is actually highly bio-available [2].

MZM is also a profound detoxifying agent which is able to remove a number of toxins entering into the GI tract through contaminated foods and drinks. This action of MZM nutritional active substance (micronized zeolite mordenite) is based on its strong adsorption, absorption, and ion-exchange properties.

Large molecules and particles (e.g. bacteria and viruses) are bound by adsorption in meso- and macro-pores as well as on

the surface of micronized zeolite particles. Small molecules (e.g. ammonia) are bound to Mordenite by absorption into zeolite micropores.

Cations of toxic heavy metals (e.g. Hg2+, Cd2+, or Pb2+) are bound in micro-pores by ion-exchange process. In these cases, micronized Mordenite releases equimolar amounts of its own metal cations: calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), sodium (Na+), and potassium (K+).

There are several scientific studies that show that zeolite, due to its profound absorption and adsorption actions, acts as strong agent for removal of harmful compounds [3-18,38]:

     (i) which are ingested through consumption of contaminated foods and drinks;

     (ii) which are generated in gastrointestinal tract, especially in colon due to microbial activity;

     (iii) as well as bacteria [19,20], and viruses [21].

Most common toxins which are ingested into human organism include:

     (i) micotoxins (like aflatoxin B1);

     (ii) polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (such as pyrene or benzo[α]pyrene);

     (iii) nitrosamines;

     (iv) heavy metals;

     (v) amines (aliphatic like cadaverine and putrescine, and also aromatic ones such as aniline); and

     (vi) dioxins (e.g. 2,3,7,8-tetrachloro-dibenzo-p-dioxin).

Accumulating evidence has also indicated that Micronized Zeolite (MZ) plays important role in regulation of immune system and other protective processes related to gut. It was reported that silica and aluminum-silicates act as non specific immune-stimulators similar to super-antigens, being able to activate a relatively large fractions of T cell population. Several studies in mice suggests that antimetastatic activity of MZ could be contributed to non-specific immune response through activation of macrophages and T cells [28]. There is convincing evidence in studies showing MZ potential to induce ROS release by macrophages including TNF-alpha which fulfils dual signalling requirement for proper T-cell activation. Non Specific Immune stimulating effect has been noticed in limited human studies as well, where MZ could cause increase in CD4 and CD8 count [29].

Furthermore, MZ being potent cation exchanger affects electrolyte balance and therefore might influence second messenger system (adenylyl cyclase) responsible for the 5-HT receptors regulated neuronal functions. This was demonstrated in mammary carcinoma [30] bearing mice study where reduced binding of 3H-8-OH-DPAT to 5-HT1A receptors was noticed. Micronised zeolite (MZC) particles, show inhibitory effect to tumor growth factors through adsorption and calcium channel signaling [31], as well as ability to preserve cell from damage [32] particularly by absorbing and eliminating harmful hydroxyl radical. Interestingly, Zeolite can prolong/preserve life of irradiated animals [33].

• Oxidative stress is characterized by systemic manifestation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) due to lack of biological system's ability to readily neutralize the reactive intermediates like O2− (superoxide radical), OH (hydroxyl radical) and H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) or to repair the resulting damage created by those intermediates. The damage created by ROS is represented their binding to proteins, DNA or lipid membranes causing loss of their function. More recent studies argue that micronized zeolite can serve as agent that counteracts oxidative stress. The mechanism is still elusive, however Montinaro et. al. showed that dietary zeolite supplementation can reduce oxidative damage and plaque generation in the brain of an Alzheimer's disease mouse model [34]. Previous work shows that zeolites act as strong scavengers of ROS [32], can increase blood levels of antioxidant enzymes (gluthatione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and gluthatione reductase) while reducing lipid peroxidation [35, 36], which represents plausible part of mechanism how zeolites so effectively protect from liver damage and assist to its regeneration[37].

• It was reported that silicon is connected with bone mineralization and osteoporosis [39], collagen synthesis and ageing of skin [40], condition of hair and nails [41], atherosclerosis [42,43], Alzheimer disease [44,45], as well as with other biological effects and disorders. Animal studies have also shown the possibility of zeolite (calcium, magnesium, sodium aluminosilicate) as a viable source of silicon [46,47,48]. Silicon rich (Si:Al ratio at least 4:1) zeolite partially breaks (hydrolyzes) down into bio-available ortho-silicic acid (H4SiO4) in the digestive system when in contact with low pH (hydrochloric acid). Presented evidence correlates well with the fact that dietary coral calcium and zeolite protects bone in postmenopausal bone loss [49].

Enhanced Protein Uptake

• Another great feature of MZM-DYNACOL is its ability to enhance protein uptake in the gut. Zeolites have been known for facilitating increased food digestibility. The digestion retention time is increased by zeolites in the gut of animals (most likely humans as well due to digestion similarity). Therefore, an increased transit time of food digestion allows the digestive enzyme activity to be more effective in the digestion of nutrients. This is confirmed by several studies in animals [50] [51].

• Proteolytic rate of trypsin (protein digestion enzyme in the duodenum) increases significantly in presence of Micronized Zeolite [52]

• The trypsin activity rate in presence of zeolite is also confirmed in vivo [50]

• From these studies there is an important notion that small particle size produces better and more effective interaction with

enzymes. This is reasonable, since small particles have larger overall reactive surface area, thus interaction with enzymes in the intestine is more pronounced.

• The second very important notion is that trypsin enzyme (like any other enzymes) can interact with substrate (in this case protein/peptide) with a reaction limited capacity - referred to as enzyme kinetics or reaction rate. Since micronized zeolite can increase this enzyme turnover rate significantly, MZM can be considered as catalyst helping to accelerate reaction time of enzyme, thus increase digestion rate. How this translates to protein consumption in sportsman? Let’s assume that maximum protein digestion of person per hour is 20 grams. If MZM increases this digestion by increasing enzyme activity, the uptake of protein might increase thus enable better protein synthesis in muscle, particularly in short time-frame after exercise when protein is most needed but limited due to maximum enzyme rate.
